Texas's generating fleet in context
Texas holds 201.3 gigawatts of nameplate capacity across 1,071 plants, the largest fleet among all states. Natural gas furnishes the bulk at 41.1%, followed by wind at 22.0% and solar at 17.2%. Coal provides 8.9%, battery storage 7.2%, nuclear 2.6%, and smaller shares from hydro and other sources. These percentages describe capacity — what the equipment could produce running flat out — not the actual generation these plants deliver over time, which varies widely by fuel type.
The largest plants are coal-fired W A Parish at 4,008 MW and the two nuclear stations South Texas Project at 2,709 MW and Comanche Peak at 2,430 MW. Coal's third-largest facility, Martin Lake, reaches 2,380 MW. Natural gas plants cluster in the 310 facilities that together hold 41.1% of the state's capacity, with Forney Energy Center among them at 1,894 MW. Solar and wind are numerous but distributed across smaller units, with 238 solar plants and 228 wind plants spread throughout the fleet.
The generating fleet spans nearly a century of construction, from Dunlap TP 1 built in January 1927 to NRG THW GT Electric Generating Station first online in May 2026. This range encompasses 1,059 plants currently in service, representing decades of investment and replacement across the state's power infrastructure.
