Pennsylvania's generating fleet in context
Pennsylvania holds 53.1 gigawatts of nameplate capacity across 270 plants in service as of May 2026, ranking fourth among the fifty states and the District of Columbia by total capacity. Natural gas makes up 56.7% of that total at 30,095 megawatts across 72 plants, while nuclear contributes 19.8% with just 5 plants. Coal supplies 10% across 13 plants. Hydro, wind, solar, and other sources together account for the remainder, with hydro at 4.6%, wind at 2.9%, solar at 2.1%, and other fuels at 3.8%; battery storage adds 0.1%.
The largest plants are all nuclear: Peach Bottom in York County with 2,876 megawatts, TalenEnergy Susquehanna in Luzerne County with 2,532 megawatts, and Limerick in Montgomery County with 2,277 megawatts. The two largest coal plants are Conemaugh in Indiana County at 1,963 megawatts and Keystone in Armstrong County at 1,883 megawatts. The fleet spans nearly a century, from Piney coming online in February 1928 to Wallenpaupack entering service in June 2026.
