Wind in the US fleet

The United States had 1,366 wind plants with 165.6 gigawatts of nameplate capacity as of May 2026. This capacity—what the equipment could produce running flat out—represented 11.8% of all US generating capacity. Wind facilities spread across 43 states, but concentrated heavily in a few: just five states held half the fleet. Texas dominated with 26.8% of the national wind capacity, holding 44,298 megawatts across 228 plants. That wind capacity made up 22% of Texas's own generating fleet. Oklahoma, Iowa, Kansas, Illinois, and New Mexico followed, together accounting for the bulk of the remainder.

The largest single wind plant was SunZia Wind South in New Mexico, coming online in 2026 with 2,561 megawatts, followed by SunZia Wind North, also in New Mexico, at 1,089 megawatts. Great Prairie Wind in Texas reached 1,027 megawatts, and Traverse Wind Project in Oklahoma held 999 megawatts. Vineyard Wind 1 in Massachusetts, the largest offshore installation, brought 800 megawatts online in 2026. The oldest wind plant on record was Lamar Plant in Colorado, first operating since January 1946. The newest was Baron Winds II in New York, coming online in May 2026.
