US Other Power Plants

The United States held 50.6 GW of capacity from geothermal, biomass, petroleum, other gases, and pumped storage as of May 2026 — equipment that could produce that much running flat out, not what it generated. This fleet of 1,539 plants made up 3.6% of all US generating capacity. The fleet is spread widely: 51 states and territories held at least some capacity, though it concentrated in a few. The leading eight states held half of it. California topped the national list with 4,672 MW across 152 plants, 9.2% of the fuel type's total capacity. New York held 4,527 MW in 99 plants, 9.0% of the national total and the largest share of any state's own capacity at 10.1%. Florida, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Louisiana rounded out the top six.

The five largest plants by capacity were Oswego Harbor Power in New York at 1,804 MW, Brame Energy Center in Louisiana at 1,707 MW, Canal in Massachusetts at 1,495 MW, Geysers Unit 5-20 in California at 1,236 MW, and Intercession City in Florida at 1,197 MW. The oldest plant still listed came online in August 1927: Thief River Falls in Minnesota. The newest was Jackson Pike WWTP Cogen Engines in Ohio, which started in March 2026. Plant counts run down to sub-megawatt units, so a large count does not make a large fleet — capacity is the size measure.
