Arizona's generating fleet in context
Arizona's generating fleet holds 42.7 gigawatts of nameplate capacity, ranking eighth among the fifty states and territories. What the equipment could produce running flat out is not the same as what it actually generates: a megawatt of solar and a megawatt of nuclear appear identical in these figures but produce very different amounts of electricity over a year.
Natural gas leads the fuel mix at 41.5% of capacity across 33 plants, followed by solar at 19.2% across 105 plants and battery storage at 12.4% across 35 plants. Nuclear accounts for 9.8%, hydro for 6.8%, coal for 6.1%, wind for 4%, and other sources for 0.1%. The largest plants are Palo Verde, a nuclear facility with 4,210 megawatts, Springerville coal at 1,779 megawatts, Santan natural gas at 1,326 megawatts, Glen Canyon Dam hydro at 1,312 megawatts, and Harquahala Generating Project natural gas at 1,277 megawatts.
The fleet spans from Horse Mesa, first online in April 1927, through the newest addition, Justice Energy Storage, which came online in May 2026. Of 200 plants tracked in the state, 197 were in service as of May 2026.
