Coal in the US fleet
The United States holds 194.6 gigawatts of coal capacity spread across 199 plants as of May 2026. This represents 13.9% of all US generating capacity. Capacity is what the equipment could produce running flat out, not what it generated.
Coal plants exist in 39 states, but the fleet is concentrated in a handful of them. Ten states together hold half the national total. Texas leads with 17,853 megawatts across 12 plants, accounting for 9.2% of the coal fleet nationally, though coal makes up only 8.9% of Texas's own capacity. Indiana follows with 13,789 megawatts, where coal comprises 40.1% of the state's total. West Virginia holds 13,090 megawatts and relies most heavily on coal, with the fuel supplying 81.5% of its generating capacity. Kentucky, Missouri, and Alabama round out the top tier of coal states.
The largest single plant is W A Parish in Texas, with 4,008 megawatts across 9 units. Bowen in Georgia follows at 3,499 megawatts, then Crystal River in Florida at 3,449 megawatts. The fleet spans from Neenah Paper Munising Mill in Michigan, which came online in January 1930, to Sandy Creek Energy Station in Texas, which came online in May 2013.
