Kansas's generating fleet in context
Kansas holds 21.1 gigawatts of generating capacity, ranking 24th among the 51 largest power-producing regions. This is nameplate capacity — what the equipment could produce running flat out, not what it actually generated. Wind dominates the fleet at 46% of capacity spread across 52 plants, followed by coal at 23.6% from five plants, natural gas at 18.3% across 54 plants, and nuclear at 6.1% from a single unit. Solar and hydro together account for 2.1%, with 39 solar plants and one hydroelectric facility.
The three largest plants shape the upper end of the fleet's power output. Jeffrey Energy Center, a coal plant with three units, leads at 2,160 MW. La Cygne, another coal station with two units, follows at 1,599 MW. Wolf Creek Generating Station, the state's only nuclear plant with one unit, stands at 1,296 MW. Natural gas generation centers on Emporia Energy Center at 730 MW across seven units. High Banks Wind represents the largest single wind installation at 643 MW.
The fleet spans nearly a century in age. Augusta Electric Plant No 1, first online in August 1929, anchors the oldest end. The newest addition, Chanute Solar, came online in May 2026. Between those dates, the fleet has accumulated a broad mix of assets across 192 plants, with 191 in service as of the measurement date.
