Connecticut's generating fleet in context
Connecticut's power plant fleet holds 11 gigawatts of nameplate capacity across 182 plants in service as of May 2026, ranking 40th among the 51 state-level fleets from largest to smallest. Natural gas provides the largest share at 45.1% of the state's capacity across 47 plants, while 28.4% comes from other fuels at 29 plants. Nuclear accounts for 20.6% from a single facility, and solar makes up 4.5% spread across 92 installations. Hydro and wind together contribute 1.3% and 0% respectively.
The largest individual facility is Millstone, a nuclear plant with 2,260 megawatts of capacity that first came online in 1975 with two units. Natural gas plants dominate the next tier: CPV Towantic Energy Center produces 842 megawatts from three units beginning in 2018, and Lake Road Generating Plant provides 840 megawatts from three units since 2002. Middletown, classified as other fuel, generates 786 megawatts from four units installed in 1958, while Kleen Energy Systems rounds out the largest plants at 693 megawatts from three natural gas units that began operation in 2011.
Connecticut's fleet spans nearly a century of equipment. The oldest plant still listed is Rocky River, which came online in January 1928. The newest is Stafford Solar One, which entered service in April 2026. This range reflects the state's reliance on long-lived nuclear and conventional generation alongside more recent additions of distributed solar capacity.
