Arkansas's generating fleet in context
Arkansas holds 19.1 GW of generating capacity as of May 2026, ranking 28th among the 51 states and territories counted from the largest fleet. This nameplate capacity reflects what the equipment could produce running flat out, not what it actually generated. The state's 122 plants, 121 in service, draw from a diverse mix of sources. Natural gas provides the largest share at 37.7% across 18 plants, followed by coal at 28.7% from 5 plants. Solar accounts for 14.5% of capacity spread across 67 installations, while nuclear contributes 9.6%. Hydro, other sources, wind, and battery storage together make up the remaining 9.6% of the fleet.
The largest plant by far is Union Power Station, a natural gas facility in Union County with 2,428 MW across 12 units that came online in 2003. Arkansas Nuclear One, which began operating in 1974, provides 1,845 MW from two units in Pope County. Two coal plants follow: Independence Steam Electric Station with 1,800 MW from 1983 and White Bluff with the same capacity from 1980. Magnet Cove, a natural gas plant in Hot Spring County, rounds out the top five with 746 MW in three units from 2005.
The state's power plants span more than nine decades. The oldest still in the directory is Carpenter, which first came online in January 1932. The newest is Cherry Valley PV I, a solar installation that entered service in April 2026.
