North Carolina's generating fleet in context
North Carolina's power plants hold 40.1 GW of nameplate capacity as of May 2026, ranking the state ninth largest by capacity in the country. This is what the equipment could produce running flat out — not generation, which depends on how often and intensively each plant runs, and varies greatly between a megawatt of solar and a megawatt of nuclear.
Natural gas dominates the fleet at 47.4% of capacity across 22 plants, followed by solar at 17.6% across 758 installations. Nuclear accounts for 13.5% in 3 plants and coal for 12.2% in 4 plants. Hydro provides 4.9%, with other sources and battery storage rounding out the remainder. The five largest plants are Roxboro, a coal facility with 2,558 MW coming online in 1966; Belews Creek, natural gas at 2,491 MW from 1974; McGuire, nuclear at 2,441 MW from 1981; Lincoln Combustion, natural gas at 2,290 MW from 1995; and Sherwood H Smith Jr Energy Complex, natural gas at 2,245 MW from 2001.
The oldest plant still listed in the fleet, Lake Lure, first came online in January 1927. The newest, Apex NC Solar, entered service in March 2026. The fleet spans close to a century of power plant development across 928 plants in service.
