Vermont's generating fleet in context
Vermont's power fleet holds 899 megawatts of nameplate capacity across 117 plants, making it the 50th largest among the 51 state and territory fleets measured from largest down. Hydro leads the mix at 320 megawatts, or 35.5% of the state total, spread across 45 plants. Other fuels—chiefly conventional generation—contribute 252 megawatts, 28.0%. Solar ranks third at 161 megawatts across 53 installations, followed by wind at 151 megawatts from five plants and battery storage at 16 megawatts.
The state's five largest plants are Kingdom Community Wind in Orleans County, a 65-megawatt wind turbine that came online in 2012; J C McNeil in Chittenden County, a 60-megawatt other-fuel plant from 1984; VPPSA Project 10 in Franklin County, 47 megawatts with two units first online in 2010; Berlin 5 in Washington County, a 42-megawatt facility from 1972; and Bellows Falls in Windham County, a 41-megawatt hydro plant with three units dating to 1928. The fleet spans nearly a century, from Marshfield 6, first online since January 1927, to Morrisville, which came online in August 2024.
