Maryland's generating fleet in context

Maryland's generating fleet holds 13.3 gigawatts of nameplate capacity across 234 plants, ranking 35th among the 51 state-level fleets counting down from the largest. This figure represents what the equipment could produce running flat out, not what it actually generates — a megawatt of solar and a megawatt of nuclear appear identical here but produce very different amounts of electricity over a year.

Natural gas dominates the fleet at 49.4% of capacity with 15 plants, followed by nuclear at 13.9% from a single plant. Coal provides 10.3%, solar 8.1%, and other fuels comprise the remainder, including hydro at 4.1%, wind at 1.8%, and battery storage under 1%. The largest installation is Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant with 1,850 megawatts, followed by Chalk Point Power at 1,825 megawatts of natural gas capacity. Brandon Shores contributes 1,370 megawatts from coal, while Wildcat Point Generation Facility and Key, both natural gas facilities coming online in 2018, add 1,114 and 831 megawatts respectively.

The fleet spans from Conowingo, first online in March 1928, to TPE MD PR232, which came online in May 2026. This range captures nearly a century of generating equipment, with the oldest continuing to serve alongside the newest additions to the system.

Written from the EIA figures on this page, covering data through May 2026.

Frequently asked questions

How many power plants are there in Maryland?
Maryland has 234 operable power plants with a combined nameplate capacity of 13.3 GW, the 35th largest generating fleet of the 51 states and DC. 234 of them are currently in service.
What is the largest power plant in Maryland?
Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in Calvert County, a nuclear plant with 1,850 MW of capacity across 2 generating units, first online in May 1975.
What fuel do Maryland's power plants use?
Natural gas accounts for the largest share of Maryland's generating capacity — 6,564 MW, or 49.4% of the total, across 15 plants. Nuclear follows at 13.9%, Other follows at 12.3%, Coal follows at 10.3%. Note this is capacity, not generation — what the fleet could produce, not what it did.
What is the oldest power plant in Maryland?
Conowingo is the oldest still operable, with its earliest unit entering service in March 1928. The most recent addition is TPE MD PR232, online since May 2026.
