Wyoming's generating fleet in context
Wyoming holds 12.7 gigawatts of nameplate capacity across 70 plants in service as of May 2026, ranking 36th among the 51 state fleets. This is capacity — what the equipment could produce running flat out — not generation, which differs by fuel type and time of use.
Wind and coal each anchor roughly a third of the state's fleet, at 37% and 31.6% respectively, while natural gas makes up 27%. Hydro contributes 2.4%, with solar at 1.9% and other sources at 0.1%. The five largest plants are Jim Bridger, a 2,326-megawatt natural gas station; Laramie River Station with 1,863 megawatts of coal capacity; Dave Johnston, a 817-megawatt coal plant; Naughton, a 707-megawatt natural gas facility; and Rock Creek Wind, which added 590 megawatts in September 2025.
The state's fleet spans nearly a century, from Guernsey online in July 1927 to Rock Creek Wind in September 2025. The fleet includes 71 plants tracked by EIA down to sub-megawatt backup generators, but capacity rather than plant count measures meaningful fleet size.
