New Mexico's generating fleet in context
New Mexico's power-plant fleet holds 17.9 gigawatts of capacity, ranking 32nd among all states and territories. Wind leads the fleet at 45.1% of total capacity across 31 plants, followed closely by natural gas at 20.4% and solar at 20.2%. Coal represents 9.1% of capacity, battery storage 4.5%, hydro 0.5%, and other sources 0.3%. The fleet spans 169 plants, though plant counts include small backup generators alongside major generating units, so capacity rather than count reflects the fleet's true size.
The five largest plants carry much of the state's output potential. SunZia Wind South, a wind facility in Lincoln County, leads at 2,561 megawatts and came online in May 2026. Four Corners coal plant in San Juan County delivers 1,636 megawatts from two units dating to 1969. SunZia Wind North, also newly online in May 2026, adds 1,089 megawatts in Torrance County. Natural gas plants Hobbs Generating Station and Luna Energy Facility contribute 682 and 650 megawatts respectively.
The fleet spans nearly nine decades. Elephant Butte, which came online in November 1940, is the oldest plant still listed. At the other end, SunZia Wind South, brought into service in May 2026, is the newest. One unit was out of service as of May 2026, leaving 168 plants operational.
