Nebraska's generating fleet in context
Nebraska's generating fleet holds 12.1 GW of nameplate capacity as of May 2026, ranking 37th among the 51 U.S. jurisdictions. The state operates 138 plants, of which 137 are in service. This is capacity — what the equipment could produce running flat out — not generation, which depends on how much those megawatts actually run through the year.
Coal carries 35.4% of the fleet's capacity across 8 plants, followed by wind at 29.0% from 33 plants and natural gas at 21.5% from 30 plants. Nuclear accounts for 6.6%, hydro for 2.7%, solar for 1.3%, and other sources for 3.4%. The five largest plants are Nebraska City and Gerald Gentleman, both coal facilities at 1,390 MW and 1,363 MW respectively; Cooper Nuclear Station at 801 MW; North Omaha, a coal plant at 645 MW; and Turtle Creek, a natural gas facility at 528 MW that came online in 2025.
The fleet spans nearly a century. The oldest plant still listed is Falls City, first online in August 1930. The newest addition is Standing Bear Lake, which came online in November 2025.
