Power Plants in Massachusetts

Massachusetts holds 14 gigawatts of nameplate capacity across 682 plants in service as of May 2026, ranking 34th among the 51 regions counted by total capacity. This figure represents what the equipment could produce running flat out, not what it actually generates — a megawatt of solar and a megawatt of natural gas appear identical here despite producing very different amounts of electricity over a year.

Natural gas carries 43.1% of the state's capacity across 40 plants, while hydro supplies 15% through 32 plants. Other sources account for 19.7% of capacity, solar for 11.8% across 531 installations, wind for 6.4% across 20 plants, and battery storage for 4%. The largest plant is Canal, with 1,495 megawatts of other-fuel capacity coming online in 1968. Northfield Mountain, a hydro facility with 1,168 megawatts, followed in 1972. Fore River Generating Station added 872 megawatts of natural gas capacity in 2003, while the newest major addition, Vineyard Wind 1, brought 800 megawatts of wind capacity online in 2026.

The fleet spans nearly a century, from Indian Orchard, first brought online in January 1928, to Sherman, which came online in December 2026.
