Ohio's generating fleet in context
Ohio has 35.8 gigawatts of nameplate capacity across 214 plants in service, ranking 11th among the fifty states by fleet size. This is capacity — what the equipment could produce running flat out, not what it actually generated. Natural gas dominates at 19,779 megawatts or 55.3% of the total, followed by coal at 6,937 megawatts (19.4%). Solar has grown to 4,872 megawatts (13.6%), nuclear provides 2,237 megawatts (6.3%), and wind accounts for 1,104 megawatts (3.1%). Other sources, including battery storage and hydroelectric generation, make up the remainder.
The largest plant is Gavin Power, a coal facility with 2,600 megawatts of capacity. Guernsey Power Station, a natural gas plant that came online in 2023, ranks second with 2,055 megawatts. Cardinal, another coal plant, holds 1,880 megawatts. Hanging Rock Energy Facility, a natural gas installation, provides 1,430 megawatts, and the Perry nuclear plant contributes 1,312 megawatts. The state's fleet spans from Clevelandcliffs Warren, which first came online in October 1934, to Trumbull Energy Center, which entered service in April 2026.
