Mississippi's generating fleet in context
Mississippi's power-generating capacity totals 18.1 gigawatts as of May 2026, ranking it 31st among the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The fleet of 63 operating plants is built mainly on natural gas, which accounts for 63.7% of capacity across 27 plants. Coal provides 15.1% through just two facilities, while solar and nuclear each deliver substantial shares: solar at 10.3% across 25 installations, and nuclear at 8.0% from a single unit. Wind, other sources, and battery storage together make up the remainder.
The largest plants in the state are Victor J Daniel Jr, a coal facility in Jackson County with 2,229 megawatts of capacity, and Grand Gulf, the nuclear plant in Claiborne County rated at 1,440 megawatts. Three natural gas plants rank among the top five: Magnolia Power Plant in Benton County with 1,004 megawatts, Jack Watson in Harrison County with 919 megawatts, and TVA Southaven Combined Cycle in Desoto County with 904 megawatts. The fleet's oldest asset still in service began operation in June 1951, while the newest came online in January 2026, spanning more than seven decades of generating equipment.
