Natural gas makes up 29.2% of this capacity at 7,958 megawatts spread across 20 plants, followed by nuclear at 25.2% with 6,875 megawatts in just 4 plants. Coal accounts for 18.9% at 5,159 megawatts in 4 plants, hydro for 16.1% at 4,390 megawatts across 32 plants, solar for 7.6% at 2,062 megawatts in 125 plants, and other sources for the remaining 2.9% at 786 megawatts in 29 plants.
The five largest plants by capacity are Oconee, a nuclear facility with 2,667 megawatts; Cross, a coal plant with 2,452 megawatts; Catawba, another nuclear plant at 2,410 megawatts; Bad Creek, a hydro installation with 1,680 megawatts; and Winyah, a coal plant with 1,276 megawatts. The oldest generating equipment still in the state's fleet came online in June 1927 at Columbia Canal Hydro, while the newest plant, Cedar Creek, entered service in August 2026. These figures represent the capacity available if all equipment ran at full output simultaneously — not the electricity the state actually generates, which varies with demand and equipment utilization.
