Natural gas powers 67% of the state's capacity across 53 plants, led by Nine Mile Point at 2,440 megawatts. Coal accounts for 11.4%, split between Big Cajun 2 with 1,903 megawatts and R S Nelson at 1,434 megawatts. Nuclear supplies 7.6% from 2 plants totalling 2,236 megawatts. Solar has grown to 4.8% of capacity across 19 plants, while other fuels — primarily represented by Brame Energy Center at 1,707 megawatts — make up 8.6%. Hydro contributes 0.7% from a single 192-megawatt plant.
The fleet spans more than eight decades. The oldest plant still listed, CITGO Refinery Powerhouse, came online in January 1942. The newest, Sterlington Solar, entered service in January 2026. Of the five largest plants by capacity, ages range from R S Nelson at 1959 through Acadia Energy Center at 2002, with three others from 1971, 1975, and 1981.
