Wyoming's generation mix in context

Coal supplies 54.1% of Wyoming's electricity generation, making it by far the state's largest source. Wind ranks second at 30.4%, followed by gas at 10.6%, hydro at 2.8%, and solar at 1.1% on a utility-scale basis (1.2% when rooftop solar is included). Over the decade from 2016 to 2025, Wyoming's electricity mix underwent a dramatic shift. Coal fell from 85.8% in 2016 to 58.5% in 2025, a decline of 27.3 percentage points. Wind surged from 9.4% to 27.1%, gaining 17.7 points, while gas climbed from 1.7% to 9.9%. The renewable share expanded from 11.5% to 30.3%, an increase of 18.8 points, though solar remained marginal at 1.1% in 2025.

Wyoming's generation mix differs sharply from the national pattern. Coal supplies 38.3 percentage points more of Wyoming's electricity than the nation's average, while gas provides 30.2 points less. The state's renewable share of 34.2% exceeds the national 24.9%, yet Wyoming still lags most of its neighbours. Four of the six bordering states—South Dakota, Idaho, Montana, and Colorado—have higher renewable shares; only Nebraska and Utah fall below Wyoming's figure.

How this is measured

Figures are net generation reported to the U.S. Energy Information Administration for all sectors — utilities, independent power producers, and industrial and commercial plants that generate their own power. Shares are of the 12 months to May 2026, rather than a single month, because generation is strongly seasonal: solar peaks in summer and hydro with the spring melt, so one month says more about the weather than about the grid.

“Other” is the reported total minus the six named sources, so the shares add to exactly 100%. It holds geothermal, biomass, petroleum, other gases, and pumped storage — the last of which consumes more electricity than it returns, and so can be negative. Geothermal and biomass are renewable, which is why the renewable share above is slightly larger than wind, solar and hydro added together.

This is generation, not consumption. Electricity crosses state lines freely, so a state can generate more than it uses or rely on imports for a large part of its supply; neither shows up here.
