Pennsylvania Electricity Prices

Pennsylvania's residential electricity rate in May 2026 stood at 21.55¢/kWh, placing the state 16th among the 50 states and DC in cost. This was 3.11¢/kWh higher than the national average of 18.44¢/kWh, a difference of 16.8%. Among neighboring states, only New York at 29.93¢/kWh and New Jersey at 23.27¢/kWh exceeded Pennsylvania's price; Maryland came in just above at 21.77¢/kWh, while Ohio, Delaware, and West Virginia all fell below at 19.52¢/kWh, 19.38¢/kWh, and 16.80¢/kWh respectively. Commercial and industrial rates followed the pattern, at 13.56¢/kWh and 10.31¢/kWh.

The price has climbed steeply over the past five years, rising 55.6% since May 2021 when it was 13.85¢/kWh. Over two decades, the increase was even more dramatic at 99.9%, from 10.78¢/kWh in May 2006. Since records began in January 2001, Pennsylvania's residential rate has grown by 146.6%, from 8.74¢/kWh—the state's record low. The current May 2026 rate represents the highest on record.

Pennsylvania households paid an average monthly bill of $172 on 845 kWh of usage, compared to the national average of $155 on 871 kWh. Though the state's rate significantly exceeds the national average, usage ran slightly below, resulting in a bill roughly $17 higher per month than the typical American household.
