Maine electricity prices in context

Maine's residential electricity rate in May 2026 stands at 28.63¢/kWh, the sixth most expensive among the 50 states and DC. This exceeds the US average of 18.44¢/kWh by 10.19¢/kWh, or 55.2%. New Hampshire, the only bordering state in the data, charges slightly less at 27.33¢/kWh.

Since records began in January 2001, the increase stands at 120.9% from 12.96¢/kWh. The rate reached its highest point in February 2026 at 32.17¢/kWh and its lowest in January 2002 at 10.66¢/kWh. Year over year, the rate has grown 2.6%.

The average monthly residential bill is $155, matching the national average despite consuming far less electricity. Maine households use 537 kWh per month compared with the national average of 871 kWh. Commercial and industrial rates stand at 23.05¢/kWh and 14.48¢/kWh respectively.
