Hawaii electricity prices in context

Hawaii's residential electricity rate stands at 52.00¢/kWh as of May 2026, the most expensive among the 50 states and DC. This is 33.56¢/kWh above the US average of 18.44¢/kWh, placing Hawaii's rate 182% higher nationally. The commercial rate is 46.19¢/kWh and the industrial rate is 41.90¢/kWh.

The state's rate has climbed sharply in recent years. Since May 2021 it has risen 57.6%, and over the past twenty years since May 2006 it has more than doubled, up 123.7%. Looking back further to January 2001, when records began, the rate has nearly tripled, rising 207%. The current price is now the highest on record, while the lowest was 14.73¢/kWh in March 2002.

The typical Hawaii household pays $215 per month for 513 kWh, compared to the national average bill of $155 for 871 kWh. Despite the exceptionally high rate, the monthly bill runs ahead of the national figure because consumption is substantially lower than the US average.
