New York electricity prices in context

New York's residential electricity rate stood at 29.93¢/kWh in May 2026, the third most expensive among the 50 states and DC. This was 62.3% higher than the national average of 18.44¢/kWh, a difference of 11.49¢/kWh. Among bordering states, only Massachusetts at 28.82¢/kWh came close; Connecticut followed at 27.37¢/kWh, while Vermont, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania ranged from 24.89¢/kWh down to 21.55¢/kWh.

The rate has climbed sharply in recent years. Since May 2021, it has risen 50.2% from 19.93¢/kWh. Over the longer term, the increase has been even steeper: a 80.7% rise since May 2006 and 115.5% since January 2001, when the rate was 13.89¢/kWh. In February 2026, the rate briefly reached 29.99¢/kWh, just shy of its record. The lowest rate on record came in April 2002 at 12.69¢/kWh.

A typical household paid $164 per month in May 2026 while using 590 kWh. The national average bill was $155 for 871 kWh, so despite the higher rate New York's monthly bill exceeded the national figure by $9, offset by lower usage per household. Commercial and industrial rates in the state stood at 22.40¢/kWh and 9.55¢/kWh respectively.
