Maine's generation mix in context

Natural gas supplied 37.7% of Maine's electricity generation since June 2025, making it the largest source. Renewable sources accounted for 58% of generation, and because renewable generation and nuclear power together make up the state's carbon-free electricity, that figure is also 58%. These shares place Maine 8th among the 51 states and DC for renewable electricity and 11th for solar.

The solar share reported by the EIA is 10.6%, but when rooftop solar installations are included alongside utility-scale solar in both the numerator and denominator, the share rises to 18.1%. Wind generated 19.4% and hydroelectric power 16.6%. Over the ten years from 2016 to 2025, renewable generation declined from 64.7% in 2016 to 59.3% in 2025, a drop of 5.4 percentage points, as hydroelectric output fell sharply from 26.1% to 17.8%. Wind grew from 14.5% to 19.4%, and solar emerged from nothing to reach 10.4% of generation. Natural gas expanded from 30.4% in 2016 to 37.5% in 2025.

Maine's renewable share significantly exceeds the national average of 24.9%, a difference of 33.1 percentage points. Its natural gas share is slightly lower than the national 40.8%. New Hampshire, the only bordering state in the data, generates a much smaller renewable share at 13.6%..

How this is measured

Figures are net generation reported to the U.S. Energy Information Administration for all sectors — utilities, independent power producers, and industrial and commercial plants that generate their own power. Shares are of the 12 months to May 2026, rather than a single month, because generation is strongly seasonal: solar peaks in summer and hydro with the spring melt, so one month says more about the weather than about the grid.

“Other” is the reported total minus the six named sources, so the shares add to exactly 100%. It holds geothermal, biomass, petroleum, other gases, and pumped storage — the last of which consumes more electricity than it returns, and so can be negative. Geothermal and biomass are renewable, which is why the renewable share above is slightly larger than wind, solar and hydro added together.

This is generation, not consumption. Electricity crosses state lines freely, so a state can generate more than it uses or rely on imports for a large part of its supply; neither shows up here.
