Counting rooftop solar
EIA reports small-scale solar — mostly rooftop panels on homes and businesses — separately, and leaves it out of the state generation total that the mix above is a share of. Florida generated 5,494 GWh that way. Counting it on both sides of the ratio takes solar from 9.7% to 11.5%.

Florida's generation mix in context
Natural gas accounted for 73% of Florida's electricity generation in the twelve months since June 2025, making it by far the largest source. Nuclear power supplied 10.4%, while solar provided 9.7% when measured as utility-scale capacity alone, or 11.5% when including rooftop solar. The remaining generation came from coal at 4.3% and other sources at 2.5%. Carbon-free sources together made up 21.3% of the state's mix, while renewables reached 10.9%.
Florida's renewable share ranked 39th among the 51 states and DC with generation data, 14 percentage points below the national figure of 24.9%. The state's reliance on natural gas was far heavier than the national average of 40.8%, and it generated no wind power. For solar specifically, Florida ranked 13th nationally, ahead of most states despite the modest size of its total renewable base. Of the two bordering states, Georgia held a higher renewable share at 12.5%, while Alabama's renewable share of 8.4% was lower.
Over the decade since 2016, Florida's electricity mix shifted markedly toward both natural gas and solar. Gas's share grew from 66.5% in 2016 to 72.9% in 2025, while solar expanded dramatically from 0.1% to 9.3% over the same period. Coal shrank from 16.5% to 3.8%, and renewable generation overall rose from 2.1% in 2016 to 10.6% in 2025. Nuclear output declined slightly from 12.3% to 11.4%, while hydro fell from 0.1% to zero.

How this is measured
Figures are net generation reported to the U.S. Energy Information Administration for all sectors — utilities, independent power producers, and industrial and commercial plants that generate their own power. Shares are of the 12 months to May 2026, rather than a single month, because generation is strongly seasonal: solar peaks in summer and hydro with the spring melt, so one month says more about the weather than about the grid.
“Other” is the reported total minus the six named sources, so the shares add to exactly 100%. It holds geothermal, biomass, petroleum, other gases, and pumped storage — the last of which consumes more electricity than it returns, and so can be negative. Geothermal and biomass are renewable, which is why the renewable share above is slightly larger than wind, solar and hydro added together.
This is generation, not consumption. Electricity crosses state lines freely, so a state can generate more than it uses or rely on imports for a large part of its supply; neither shows up here.
