Counting rooftop solar
EIA reports small-scale solar — mostly rooftop panels on homes and businesses — separately, and leaves it out of the state generation total that the mix above is a share of. Georgia generated 636 GWh that way. Counting it on both sides of the ratio takes solar from 7.7% to 8.1%.

Georgia's generation mix in context
Natural gas is the largest source of Georgia's electricity generation, supplying 39.5% of the total 147.1 TWh generated since June 2025. Nuclear power ranks second at 34.6%, followed by coal at 13.8%. Solar generated 7.7% on a utility-scale basis, or 8.1% when rooftop solar is included. Renewables together account for 12.5% of generation, placing Georgia 36th among the 51 states and DC with generation data. Carbon-free sources—renewables plus nuclear—represent 47.2% of the mix, slightly above the national carbon-free share of 42.6%.
Over the past decade, Georgia's generation mix has shifted substantially. Coal's contribution fell 14.7 percentage points, from 28.4% in 2016 to 13.7% in 2025. Nuclear rose 9 percentage points to 34.9% in 2025. Solar grew dramatically, from 0.7% to 7.7%, accounting for 7 percentage points of the increase. Renewable generation as a whole climbed from 6.6% in 2016 to 12.9% in 2025. Natural gas remained relatively stable, declining slightly from 39.6% to 38.8%.
Georgia's renewable share trails the nation's by 12.4 percentage points—the U.S. renewable share stands at 24.9%. Among bordering states, North Carolina has a higher renewable share at 14.3%, while Tennessee matches Georgia at 12.5%. Florida, Alabama, and South Carolina all generate renewables at lower shares, making most neighboring states less reliant on renewable sources.

How this is measured
Figures are net generation reported to the U.S. Energy Information Administration for all sectors — utilities, independent power producers, and industrial and commercial plants that generate their own power. Shares are of the 12 months to May 2026, rather than a single month, because generation is strongly seasonal: solar peaks in summer and hydro with the spring melt, so one month says more about the weather than about the grid.
“Other” is the reported total minus the six named sources, so the shares add to exactly 100%. It holds geothermal, biomass, petroleum, other gases, and pumped storage — the last of which consumes more electricity than it returns, and so can be negative. Geothermal and biomass are renewable, which is why the renewable share above is slightly larger than wind, solar and hydro added together.
This is generation, not consumption. Electricity crosses state lines freely, so a state can generate more than it uses or rely on imports for a large part of its supply; neither shows up here.
