New Hampshire's generation mix in context
Nuclear generated 52.9% of New Hampshire's electricity since June 2025, making it the largest source. Carbon-free generation accounted for 66.5% of the total, but renewable sources made up only 13.6% — wind at 2.4%, hydro at 6.8%, and solar at either 0% on a utility-scale basis or 2.3% when rooftop solar is included. Gas supplied 31.1%, leaving the state with a fossil fuel share of 33.2%.
The renewable share has declined over the decade. In 2016, renewables supplied 16.9% of generation; by 2025, that had fallen to 13.6% — a loss of 3.3 percentage points driven mainly by a 3.8-point drop in the "other" category, which holds geothermal and biomass alongside petroleum and pumped storage. Gas grew 2.9 points to 27.5% in 2025, while hydro gained 1.1 points and wind added 0.3 points. Coal fell from 2.2% to 1.2%, and nuclear rose slightly to 56.4%.
New Hampshire ranks 34th among the 51 states and DC in renewable generation, and 49th in solar. All three bordering states generate higher renewable shares: Vermont leads at 98.5% with hydro as its largest source, Maine reaches 58% despite having gas as its primary fuel, and Massachusetts achieves 21.2%. Nationally, renewables supply 24.9% and gas leads at 40.8%, putting New Hampshire below the national average for both measures.

How this is measured
Figures are net generation reported to the U.S. Energy Information Administration for all sectors — utilities, independent power producers, and industrial and commercial plants that generate their own power. Shares are of the 12 months to May 2026, rather than a single month, because generation is strongly seasonal: solar peaks in summer and hydro with the spring melt, so one month says more about the weather than about the grid.
“Other” is the reported total minus the six named sources, so the shares add to exactly 100%. It holds geothermal, biomass, petroleum, other gases, and pumped storage — the last of which consumes more electricity than it returns, and so can be negative. Geothermal and biomass are renewable, which is why the renewable share above is slightly larger than wind, solar and hydro added together.
This is generation, not consumption. Electricity crosses state lines freely, so a state can generate more than it uses or rely on imports for a large part of its supply; neither shows up here.
