Oklahoma's generation mix in context

Wind dominates Oklahoma's generation mix, supplying 44.9% of the state's electricity in the trailing twelve months to May 2026. Gas provides 43.3%, with coal, hydro and solar making up the remainder. Renewables account for 48.3% of generation, a figure that rises to the same 48.3% when rooftop solar is counted on both sides of the ratio, since the utility-scale solar share of 1.3% grows to 1.6% with rooftop included. This renewable share ranks 13th among the 51 states and DC with generation data. Solar ranks 40th, well below the national share of 7.2%.

The past decade brought dramatic shifts. Wind generation rose from 25.5% in 2016 to 41.8% in 2025, a gain of 16.3 percentage points. Coal fell from 24.4% to 10.4%, losing 14 percentage points. Renewables overall grew from 29.3% in 2016 to 44.9% in 2025, climbing 15.6 percentage points. Gas slipped from 46.4% to 44.7%, while hydro declined from 3.3% to 1.9%.

Oklahoma's renewable share of 48.3% far exceeds the national figure of 24.9%, a difference of 23.4 percentage points. Gas makes up a slightly larger share here than nationally, at 43.3% against 40.8%. Of the six bordering states, two—New Mexico at 52.7% and Kansas at 50.1%—generate a higher renewable share; the other four are lower, with Missouri at 14.7% the least renewable.

How this is measured

Figures are net generation reported to the U.S. Energy Information Administration for all sectors — utilities, independent power producers, and industrial and commercial plants that generate their own power. Shares are of the 12 months to May 2026, rather than a single month, because generation is strongly seasonal: solar peaks in summer and hydro with the spring melt, so one month says more about the weather than about the grid.

“Other” is the reported total minus the six named sources, so the shares add to exactly 100%. It holds geothermal, biomass, petroleum, other gases, and pumped storage — the last of which consumes more electricity than it returns, and so can be negative. Geothermal and biomass are renewable, which is why the renewable share above is slightly larger than wind, solar and hydro added together.

This is generation, not consumption. Electricity crosses state lines freely, so a state can generate more than it uses or rely on imports for a large part of its supply; neither shows up here.
