Idaho electricity prices in context

Idaho's residential electricity rate of 12.35¢/kWh in May 2026 ranks as the least expensive in the nation among the 50 states and DC. The rate runs 6.09¢/kWh below the US average of 18.44¢/kWh, a difference of 33%. Among bordering states, only Utah at 12.96¢/kWh comes close to Idaho's low rate; Oregon, Washington, Wyoming, Montana, and Nevada all charge considerably more.

Over five years the rate has climbed 19.7%, from 10.32¢/kWh in May 2021. The longer view shows even steeper growth: since May 2006 it has risen 86.6%, from 6.62¢/kWh, and since January 2001 it has jumped 137%, from 5.21¢/kWh. The current rate sits modestly below the state's recent peak of 13.01¢/kWh in March 2026, though well above the record low also set in January 2001.

A typical household pays $111 per month while using 904 kWh, compared with the national average bill of $155 on usage of 871 kWh per month. Despite consuming slightly more electricity than the national average, Idaho households spend substantially less, a result of the state's far cheaper rates. Commercial and industrial customers pay 9.34¢/kWh and 7.21¢/kWh respectively.
