The state's advantage comes from two sources working in the same direction. Idahoans pay 12.33¢/kWh, substantially lower than the national rate of 17.84¢/kWh, a difference of 5.51¢/kWh. They also use more electricity per home, averaging 904 kWh per month against the national 871 kWh, which adds another $6 to the typical bill but not enough to offset the savings from the lower rate. Over the twelve months, the average bill totaled $1,332.
The bill rose 1.3% from the prior year, when the average was $110. Looking back further, it has climbed 16% since May 2021, when it stood at $96, and 46.6% since December 2008, the earliest available figure at $76. Seasonally, January 2026 brought the peak at $143, while October 2025 was the lowest at $92, a swing of $51 between them.

How this is calculated
EIA’s retail-sales dataset reports, for every state and month, total residential revenue and the number of residential customers served. The average monthly bill is simply the first divided by the second — total spending across all households, spread evenly over all accounts.

Two caveats worth knowing. It is an average, so it blends apartments with large houses — a typical household in Idaho may pay well above or below $111. And it counts what was actually billed for electricity, including fixed service charges, so it is not the same as multiplying your own usage by the advertised rate.
