Iowa electricity prices in context

Iowa's residential electricity rate in May 2026 stood at 14.14¢/kWh, placing the state 43rd among the most expensive in the nation. This is substantially below the US average of 18.44¢/kWh, a difference of 4.30¢/kWh or 23.3%. Among bordering states, Iowa's rate falls in the middle range. Only Missouri and Nebraska are cheaper at 13.68¢/kWh and 13.59¢/kWh respectively, while South Dakota measures 15.73¢/kWh, Minnesota 16.95¢/kWh, Wisconsin 19.74¢/kWh, and Illinois significantly higher at 23.85¢/kWh.
