Indiana's generation mix in context

Coal generated 43.4% of Indiana's electricity since June 2025, making it the largest source. Natural gas supplied 36.2%, and together these two fossil fuels account for 82.2% of the state's generation. Renewable sources made up 17.3% of the mix, with wind at 9.6% and solar at 7.3% on a utility-scale basis—or 7.7% when rooftop solar is included. Hydroelectric generation contributed just 0.3%.

Indiana ranks 28th among the 51 states and DC for renewable electricity generation, and 20th for solar. The renewable share lags the national average of 24.9% by 7.6 percentage points, while coal's share of 43.4% far exceeds the national figure of 15.8%. Nationally, natural gas leads at 40.8%, but in Indiana coal remains dominant.

Over the past decade, Indiana's generation mix has shifted markedly away from coal and toward gas and renewables. Coal fell from 71.3% in 2016 to 44.9% in 2025, while natural gas rose from 19.7% to 36.2%. Renewable generation climbed from 5.9% in 2016 to 16.0% in 2025, driven by wind growth from 4.8% to 9.4% and solar expansion from 0.2% to 6.1%. Among Indiana's four bordering states, only Illinois has a higher renewable share at 17.4%; Kentucky, Ohio, and Michigan all generate smaller proportions of renewable electricity.

How this is measured

Figures are net generation reported to the U.S. Energy Information Administration for all sectors — utilities, independent power producers, and industrial and commercial plants that generate their own power. Shares are of the 12 months to May 2026, rather than a single month, because generation is strongly seasonal: solar peaks in summer and hydro with the spring melt, so one month says more about the weather than about the grid.

“Other” is the reported total minus the six named sources, so the shares add to exactly 100%. It holds geothermal, biomass, petroleum, other gases, and pumped storage — the last of which consumes more electricity than it returns, and so can be negative. Geothermal and biomass are renewable, which is why the renewable share above is slightly larger than wind, solar and hydro added together.

This is generation, not consumption. Electricity crosses state lines freely, so a state can generate more than it uses or rely on imports for a large part of its supply; neither shows up here.
